(Republican Party News) – The Coca-Cola company’s legal department has sent out a letter its U.S. outside counsel on January 28 that states law firms that want to work with them must “commit that at least 30 percent of each of billed associate and partner time will be from diverse attorneys, and of such amounts at least half will be from black attorneys.”
According to Breitbart, the company said the “ultimate aspiration” is to be at 50 percent diversity with at least half of that amount being black attorneys.
If the law firms in question fail to comply with these new measures after two quarterly reviews, it will result in a non-refundable 30 percent reduction in the fees payable going forward. If they continue to fail to meet the 30 percent mark the relationship with the firm could end up being terminated.
“However, blacks only make up 13.4 percent of the U.S. population, according to data from the U.S. Census. The number of black attorneys in the U.S. is disproportionally low, making up only 5 percent of all U.S. attorneys, the American Bar Association reported in 2020,” Breitbart said.
“The time has come for us to stop championing good intentions and motivations, and instead, reward action and results. Quite simply, this is now an expectation,” Bradley Gayton, the company’s senior vice president and general counsel, sad in a statement that was attached to the letter.
“My hope is that our law firm partners view this as an opportunity to effect real systemic change and that others, both within and outside of the legal profession, take inspiration and join with similar commitments of their own,” the statement read.
Now this puts law firms in a very difficult spot thanks to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act which makes it completely illegal for employment decisions to be made based on a person’s race. If a person comes along who is qualified for the position but doesn’t get the job because he’s not the right skin color, that firm could end up in court getting sued or worse.
This company policy violates the Civil Rights Act and thus it is a practice that should be chucked out the window. On top of this, it creates a protected class of individuals, which elevates that group to having more rights than other Americans of different ethnicities. In other words, it creates more racism.
